My first observation is to suggest that since Shakers lived very simply; would be to remove all the decorative items above the cabinets. If you just want to have look alike shaker cabinets; one way would be to but "framing" over the fronts of the doors. The cabinet doors above the stove have "Shaker" fronts. My husband made doors out of plywood and then added wood pieces to form the shape that shaker cabinet doors would have. They are sort of like picture frames. BTW the last active Shaker community is not too far from here. Shakers did not marry or intermingle sexually. They sell herbs and spices.

When we redid my mother in law's kitchen we used crown molding trim and glued it to the front of the laminate cabinets using liquid nails. We then painted all if the cabinets using the Rustoleum cabinet transformations kit in white tones. With a paint brush I was able to mimic a wood look easily and we no longer have to look at the outdated laminate. I hope this helps!
