i just leave mine along and they come back in the spring.
I usually cut the old dead leaves off and cover them with shredded tree leaves in the winter, just to keep them a little warm, then they come back up in the spring. some people bring them in and then plant them again.
Just leave it in the ground. By all means remove deal leaves if you wish. It will be fine.
did you leave them outdoors? I was under the impression they had to be cut back and dug up in the fall and kept in a cool, dry place, like canna bulbs.
