Some hydrangeas, if pruned wrong will not bloom as you could be removing the old wood which some flowers bloom on. Check out to see what type your plant is before trimming. PG Hydrangeas can be fully trimmed to shape the bush and it will bloom come August or earlier. As soon as it warms up a little is a good time to see what you are trimming.
I am in Maine and prune mine in the fall. I do this because I don't want it to get too large for the space it is in.
