The choices are endless. Buy a book at Homedepot or Lowe's that has ideas for yards. They have illustrations and how to start to decorate your yard.

I think a walkway, either pavers or wood chips, leading to a large firepit with seating would look great!

Since you are on a budget and really not sure about what grows in your area walk the neighborhood and see what's growing. I know if your neighbors have bulb plants they might be willing to separate some for you. Fastest and cheapest is just to tidy up what you have and paint the fence. It will draw the eye to that. Can just stain or do what I've seen others do and paint whimsical plants, trees, birds, animals on them. Good luck.

Try dividing up your yard into smaller, more manageable areas and give them different themes. Like, a raised veggie garden with stepping stones or peagravel for inbetween walkways. An other section could be a game area, like for badmitton or bocce ball. A barbque and picinc area. So on and so forth. The reasoning is to do a different area once a year so that you get to enjoy it and the whole yard will take on a more finished feel. You can spend more on each area on each project until your have what you want. Does that help any? We have half an acre so it's easy to get overwhelmed. That was such good advice that I am going to do it too!
