How to avoid hitting rocks when planting in my garden?

Buy a few bags of cheap mulch and tip them over the garden to add to the soil depth, (Use a mask and gloves to prevent legionella disease) plant things which thrive in rocky gardens, climbers, etc.

You really need to just spend the time to dig up the garden area and get the rocks out. Then add some good quality garden soil to bring it back up to whatever level you want, and then plant. Leaving the rocks in will not be conducive to a good garden - not even a rock garden. Plant roots need space to spread out, if you want healthy plants. And if you are planting a vegetable garden, this is critical. Good luck and happy gardening!

Depending on what you are planting, raised garden beds avoid the need for digging out the rocks. Otherwise Carol is right -- you will need to dig them out. However, depending on size and shape you can use them as landscaping features or create a rock garden which has sufficient soil for plant growth.

Here on the rock bound coast of Maine that is quite a problem. However I have a friend who has a very nice vegetable garden planted in such soil. They just keep working at it and have very good sun!
