Can you take the dirt out of the flower boxes and fit in a liner or pot and put the dirt in that? You would have to water frequently to keep the plants looking nice--a few times a week in the really hot weather.
put in artificial/ silk flowers and greens and use them to change with the holidays to build up the insides just put in some red bricks and then cover with Styrofoam and add your flowers/greens ...I wish I had flower boxes on my house ...so you are pretty lucky
You could always use artificial plants, you would be able to change them with the seasons. There are an awful lot of artificial plants that look very real now. Do the planter boxes have adequate drainage?
Artificial plants is a good idea. You can also try out succulents. They are really low maintenance and very hard to kill ;)
