In my experience the Elmers wood filler type putty in the tub is the most user friendly.
Recently I talked tried the same product in a smaller amount that eas offered in a tube, and I found it very gritty or sandy. I prefer the tub product consistency and application ease.

I agree wood putty but clean wood first and get matching stain.
Use stainable wood putty. Minwax stain markers come in all types of wood tones. Don't use it like a regular marker. Dab the stain marker on the patch and use you finger to blend the color.
