I recommend impatiens around trees. They grow really well in the shade and bush out over the summer. They come in lots of beautiful colors and grow easily as long as they get water.

I say to solve both, is to put in silk flowers of your choice and change with the seasons.

I have always had good luck with vinca flowers (not the vine). For me, impanients get leggy and begonias seem to rot. I live in New Jersey, so I would suggest you go to your local nursery and talk to them. Maybe ask about local wildflowers?
