Since you have no grass already, dig up the plants, root and all. If you see one starting to think about flowering, cut off the flowers so they don't go to seed before you can dig them up.

Yes the stickers come off the plant, but unless you get rid of the plant you will continue to get more. Each one of the stickers came off a plant that is most likely on your property and will grow into a plant that will release more stickers. You need to find the plants, they could be at ground level or a taller plant, but you should see the stickers on them. The only sure way to get rid of them is to dig them up and get all the roots. You may be able to get them using a chemical you can purchase, just check on the back to see how long you have to wait before you can safely plant, some are a short time of a few hours or days all the way up to a year. If the plants are taller, cut them off a few inches above the ground and use something to paint the cut end. That way it has less to get it to absorb into the roots. If the weeds are real tenacious, it may take more than one treatment to make sure it gets well into the roots.
