Check into the large assortment of books at Homedepot or Lowe's, in the front of the store, for ideas. You can also find books at your local library, which you can take out for two weeks. Ask at the reference desk for help.
One of my friends has a firepit that she made by digging a small circle trench and dropping in all different size rocks she found. It is beautiful and did not cost a dime! She said she dug about a 6 inch deep trench and the rocks are piled about 8-10 inches above the ground.

If you have plants in the garden, they may be affected by the heat, so make sure they are far enough away from the pit itself to not be damaged.
