What flowering plants do well in full sun yet don't require much soil?

I have a retaining wall that have small areas bricked in that I could plant if they didn't have a large root base.

    Iris' do well and don't have a large root base.

    Hardy perennial geraniums, scabiosa, small grasses like blue festuca or mondo grass or liriope, sun tolerant heuchera and heucherella, de oro daylilies are small,Mexican Heather (annual in climate zones above 8b-9), ranunculus, painted or shasta daisies, perennial violas and I could go on...

    Personally i am a big fan of evergreen perennials for containers and your situation.

    Black Eyed Susans, Phlox, Iris, Sedum, Cone Daisies all have minimal root bases, and generally will grow anywhere you put them. (And sometimes reseed themselves where you don't want them...lol. I just call those nature's surprises.)
