Hide? You could fasten drywall under this but it would be better to remove and replace with drywall. The manufacturers knew that this was not a good look, but those "buttons" and strips are there to hold the ceiling up. They are not decorative. You could glue wood strips over this but the fastening system may not be able to hold the additional weight.
Have you enough room to cover with corrugated aluminum or headboard anchored along the walls ?
Use the art of distraction. Just make sure you have an interesting focal point in the room so your eyes don't travel to the ceiling e.g., a gorgeous fresh flower arrangement.
