What zone are you in? Also, what kind of rose?

  • Prune right after the last frost. Depending on where you live, this might be late January or February, or it could be some time in early spring. Pruning just after the last frost of the season is the best time to clear away dead or diseased rose canes (stems). Since you waited until there's no chance another frost will happen, the rosebush won't get damaged by harsh temperatures or ice.

Back in the 60's people used to clean their garage and concrete driveways by making a thick paste of powdered Tide laundry detergent and water. Scrub it into the concrete really well using a broom. Let it dry fully. Overnight if you can. The paste will draw out any oil and spills as it dried.. and the Tide cleans the concrete. Spray it down with your hose, scrub away any stubborn soap spots, until all the soapy water is washed down the driveway to the street. It has to be Tide to work for some reason. None of the other powdered laundry detergents worked as well. My mom was one of those who did this several times a year and was so proud of our stain free garage floor and driveway. Mom was the fussiest women I've ever known about how the outside of the house looked. Not a weed in the yard survived, not a stain on the driveway lingered. When they first bought the house the driveway was a painting of oil splotches. It was one of the first things she tackled. My dad was a contractor so you can imagine the beating our driveway took with all the guys showing up in their old trucks that leaked oil each morning! But between mom and her Tide paste, you'd never known a car was ever driven onto the driveway.

I've always read never trim them back past Feb, or you could kill them.

Depends on where you live also. I live in Florida on the Gulf coast. We get cold here yes we do I put them under my patio table add some of those chistmas lights & put plastic shower curtain and then 2 tarps over the table to keep the cold out. I usually prune mine back in November by March they're ready to bloom. Mine are in pots as I'm a renter. Put 2 tblsp of Epson salt in the bottom, water the plants as usual, & then for every gallon pot mix warm water & Epson salt and water again.1 tblsp for every gallon pot you have. Brings out beautiful healthy blooms and leaves
