If the bark is loose, put some orchids in. I've been doing this for years. No love required, they survive on dew and rainfall. In drought give them a bit of a drink.Be sure to get natives for your area though.
I had a huge willow trunk,4.5 feet tall by 36" across.I built it into a gnome house. Circular roof,door and spiral staircase.
