You will need at least a five gallon bucket and do as Tonya suggested. Make sure you have enough drainage, and remember that the goodies in the soil gets washed out with watering and isn't replenished like when it is in the soil, good fertilizer for tomatoes/vegetables is a must. Extra calcium is also necessary or you will get blossom end rot.
Good advice from all the above, plant them deep they need good root structure, at least 1/2 to 3/4 up the stem need to be below ground.
The tomato roots run about 12 inches deep, and can branch out to the sides of the container. in a container the toms like 5 gallons of potting mix..
Tomato plants are one of the few that can be planted deeper than they originally grew, they'll send roots out of their stems, so plant as deep as you want, just make sure the tops of the plants are still showing.
