I would personally have medium density fiber board cut to size. you could paint the board to somewhat blend in with the finish of the chair.
If you want to go with the mesh iron, you would probably have to find someone who works with wrought iron. You could use treated wood attached to the frame. Be sure to coat it with numerous coats of a marine poly so they last years for you.
