Is it possible to repair the gaps in hardwood flooring?

A few months after my hardwood floors were laid, gaps developed between many of the boards. The gaps shrink a little in the hot humid summers here, but in winter they spread again icon . Other than replacing the floor, is there any way to fix them? I know this is a long shot.....

Call the company that installed them. Should be some kind of warranty.

You may want to install a humidifier in your home to keep your floors from being damaged. Also, contact the manufacturer and/or installer for help.

You could use a wood filler like "Elmers Stainable Wood Filler"

This might work if I can stain the 'filled' bits.... even if it's just to keep crumbs etc from filling them!

  • Before trying to remedy yourself, pull out your purchase papers and check your warranty. Contact the store where you purchased as well as the manufacturer.

There really is no way to close the gap on hardwood floors. The flooring should have stored in that room for at least 72 hours or more, so the wood acclimates to the climate of that room. The photo only shows 2 planks, is the floor nailed or glued? Whatever you do to patch it, it will be noticeable.

my son, who's been doing renovations for years, laid the hardwood floors for me, but I think we only waited 48 hrs before laying them. They are nailed down....my son is mystified why this happened, but perhaps the 48 vs 72 hours is the culprit. The boxes of flooring had been stored in my garage for about 8 months, during both a hot, humid Toronto summer and a frigid winter.

Contact the manufacturer of the product, they have hot lines to answer and investigate problems. Hopefully you kept the paperwork and maybe the package it came in so you have the lot number if there is one.

I suggest cleaning the floors very well, then coat with similar finish, polyurethane, whatever product and let dry, this will at least fill the gaps. .

yes, filling the gaps so crumbs don't accumulate there is better than nothing, as long as it's a clear fill, or stainable. Off colored fillers would look worse I think...

  • When I had this problem the person that installed the floors came back to my house and put caulk that was a similar color in the gaps. Then he used a wet sponge to smooth it out. My guess is that this won't be the first time that this will happen. So I bought the same caulk and now I can fix the gaps myself instead of waiting the company to return to fix it. Hope this helps.
