Durable paint for wood porch floor

Rhonda

We have a large, covered front porch with a wooden plank floor that we’ve kept painted and had no difficulties UNTIL we adopted a Great Dane. Now we can’t keep the front porch floor from incurring scratches from her paw nails. We’ve thought about covering the porch floor with outdoor carpet, but we’d really like to keep the wood and give our beloved canine access to our front porch. Is there a super paint or another solution we can try? BTW the existing paint is oil based. Thanks!

I know of no paint that can stand that kind of abuse. Even an epoxy coating will not stand up to untrimmed dog nails. Here is a discussion about just that topic. Perhaps you can find a solution there that works for you:

Might want to use a restore type product. Made by Rustoleum or even check out the products sold by Daischcoatings. They are much more durable

If the dog has free run of the porch I don't think there is anything you can do. If it is just going in and out of the house, you could consider a runner made for outdoors.

you could use a floor epoxy! This is use in garages so it looks pretty durable! https://leggari.com/

I’ve actually had a Dane and they are such special dogs. We put and indoor/outdoor rug on our deck. It helped but our biggest factor was walks. Not really DIY topic but walks helped curb his exuberance at home
