If you are afraid the drill will crack or break the pot, start small and go bigger on the size of the hole. Let the drill do the work, don't press too hard on the drill or it will crack or break.
They make masonry drills to put on the drill for the new bit. They look different than the regular drills. You can check where tools are sold for such a masonry drill. Best of luck with that.
It usually helps to put some heavy tape where the hole is going. You wouldn't think it would help any, but my husband always does this and it keeps things from cracking and breaking. Do use the masonry drill bits though.
I agree with above comments. Lay a piece of masking tape on the spot to drill. Use a masonry bit in your drill. Then remove the tape. Drain holes are vital for container gardening.
Not only do I use duct tape over where I want to drill a hole, but I drill from the inside of the pot. I put the pot on the lawn to cushion it while drilling. I've found that works best to keep it from cracking.
