I use Terro. It is a liquid which you put on a piece of paper and the ants feed on it and then take it back to the ant nest and it kills them. Works very well for us.
I had that problem when we first moved into a house we bought. The house was pretty filthy so it really wasn't a surprise to see all sorts of bugs and critters! My mom told me to use boric acid (she had a jar of it in liquid - so am not sure if it's a powder mixed with water or what). The next step is to pour a little bit into an old lid or small bowl and put it under the sink in the cabinet. Ants are drawn to boric acid and it kills them. However, it is a poison so it needs to be placed where it is inaccessible to children and/or pets. Hopefully this can help to get you pointed in the right direction for a solution.
Clean everything! I use bleach/water in a spray bottle. Keep everything dry. Ants are looking for water and food. Killing them after they have arrived is like closing the barn door after the horse has escaped. Spray around the foundation of the house outside on a regular basis.
Set up ant traps. Check outside your house where there's concrete, you might find a anth hill or several. Pour hot water on the hole, this will kill them.
Try putting some cornmeal in bottle tops and laying it at the entrance spots. They will take it back to the nest and eat it and explode.. I have also heard that bay leaves work well.
We had the same type of situation as Patricia Kennesaw, GA
When we moved into here (mobile home) ants had invaded and started nesting inside the walls. I couldn't use sprays or call in pest control due to the wife's Asthma.
I at the time had some Boric acid crystals so I mixed a little sugar into it and placed the mixture into the cabinets in small low sided jar lids (baby food lids) . After about 5-6 weeks... NO ants.
I use Terro. A little on a shiny piece of paper . They take it back it their families, and they all die. Last year I purchased some Terro that comes for outside with stakes. Put it outside near my kitchen widow took care, no problems inside.
