Cinderblocks, although some debate the use of them, but are used in many community gardens. At my old house we used slumpstone to match existing masonry. Ours is permanent - so something to think about if you decide to go the masonry route.

there are plastic/composite boards being manufactured for raised garden kits. check at the local lumber yard.
Also, you could use bricks, pavers, just several large pots.
Our neighbor used gutter strips on the side of his shed and end of his house to grow herbs, lettuce, and other cold veggie plants. Our life long friends cut an old water heater in two and used half at a time to plant flowers. (they could have just as easily planted veggies). Some people use stones/bricks for making retaining walls and put them in a round rectangle 2 or 3 deep for raised planters on their back yard. They make them long and narrow to be able to walk all around it. You can build them as high as you like. They filled it with potting soil (from largest bags). Hope this gives you some ideas.
