If you live in a milder climate, they can be planted outside. They turn into beautiful shrubs. I give all of mine to a girlfriend, she has a lovely Grove of them growing. Her cats love it, they like to hide there in the summer when it is hot.
In Sydney, Australia; pointsettia's are around at Christmas time. So they must be a plant that likes warm/hot (in Sydney) climates. If they are in pots, I don't think that they would like direct exposure to the hot summer sun. I guess your local nursery would be the best place to go for advice, and for advice on plants that thrive in your locality. Good Luck. xo
