Use a hose and spray paint to out line the area, once you figure out a design ,lay heavy landscape fabric and put rocks in
This should have been part of the original plan, but hindsight is always 20/20. Now you need to delineate or mark off the drive area with pressure treated lumber, a low fence or wall, small boulders - anything that would compliment existing hardscaping on your property. Would scoop up as much of the sand (but save for future use if possible), and dispose of the crushed asphalt completely. Then properly install a tumbled gravel drive and pretty up the area with yard art, (wagon wheels, farm or ranch name or logo, DIY signs, anything to provide texture, color or interest), some long benches along the sides of the building.
I would build a 1 foot wall out of stacking landscape stones, then fill with low growing shrubs or plants that are native to your region that don't require too much water (I don't know how far this is away from a spigot --- you don't want to be dragging hoses around too often!)
Pick up and toss the large chunks into garbage, add some black dirt, and scatter grass seed, cover that with peat moss, keep it moist and you will have grassy area
Having had horses, I would not put gravel down as the gravel can get caught between the hoof and the shoe causing a stone bruise. I'd put up temporary fencing and grow grass....
