We just bought a house with lightweight hollow core closet doors - the kind that slide across or behind the other when you open one side. Any ideas?
sand it down, and paint it with rustoleum or tremclad paint, mask off the hardware first.
I would sand smooth, and then paint with marine epoxy paint.
Sand it lightly, then use paint for metal. Get a new door knob also.

The way to get a good paint job is to take your door off hinges and set across saw horses, sand, wipe and paint. The drying time is important to helping the paint hardened before re-installing. If not possible to remove, you will have to tape/mask hardware, sand and paint. Only do one side at a time to be sure to give as much time for drying as possible.
Sand the door down with fine grit sandpaper. After it is smooth, wipe it down with liquid sander (available at Lowes and Home Depot) to give the door a surface new paint will stick to. Then paint with high gloss paint. If you do 2 coats, make sure the second coat brush strokes are in the opposite direction of the first (if you brush up and down the first coat, go side to side on the second). The paint will stick and stay nice longer.
