since you are renting what are you allowed to do?
Pinterest.com will have ideas for you... I would approach the landlord and ask if they object to your putting in a small sitting area.... an easy one, that looks good is using concrete pavers set in a grid, with artificial turf between them. River stones or pea gravel will also work... just be sure and use landscape fabric underneath to prevent weeds. Be prepared to show the landlord what ideas you have by printing off pictures of what you plan to do. Also be willing to leave the patio or remove it entirely... when you move.
i would use square concrete blocks -measure space first -cheap and if you move can leave or take with you
Get some large concrete pavers over a bed of sand, using landscape fabric underneath the sand, apply the pavers to leveled sand then add polymetric sand on top once done to lock in place and prevent weeds coming through. Best if you dig down 3-4" to set your patio level with the ground, but you might have to put sod back when you move.
