I've heard staining is a good technique for updating floors. So how do I stain my wood floor?
I would go with Porch and Floor paint.
Many hardware/paint stores sell paint made just for floors. I'd check out each option, or do a light sand, and stain.

pirch and floor is what will hold up best!
porch And floor paint, sorry for the spelling errors
Depending on the look you're going for- you could start with white Kilz & that will cover a multitude of sins. then you can do anything you want style or color wise- stencils, patterns, a new texture. I covered 2 floor types in 1 redo. You can see it in my projects. It was suprisingly easy!
thank you all for so much good information. i really appreciate it
It is very likely you have completed this project. Just in case, refinishing a floor is an alternative to sanding. It is similar to a piece of furniture, only larger. Won’t remove major defects (deep scratches and stains) but will greatly improve any floor’s appearance.
