I've used brass cleaner before with success, you just want to make sure you do not leave it on for very long. Try it in an inconspicuous place first to make sure it will not ruin your finish.
Brasso is an excellent metal cleaner. Are you sure you aren't seeing the actual patina of the metal?
There is a good chance that the metal has a clear finish covering it to help retard tarnish. If you really want to brighten it you may have to remove the clear finish. I have used acetone to disolve such, but it is a lot of work and messy.
I guess I'll try the acetone! Did you need to leave it on very long?
