Have you looked into Sun Setters they put a canopy on the house that rolls-up when your not using it. And when the sun is really hot let it down and you can sit out and enjoy your front yard.

I would put reflective film on the windows to reflect heat back and prevent UV damage to interior. Comes in 4 colors.... silver, blue, bronze, gold.... https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=reflective+window+film they also make shades of this type of reflective film
If you can get it past your HOA, there are also polycarbonate awnings with UV screening.... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074M6T3C6/ref=twister_B016B5OXBO?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
That sounds like a good idea.... I live in Las Vegas and looked into those "crank" type awnings and saw nothing but good reviews. However, we get such high winds here that I went with a "built" awning. Try putting another question on Hometalk like, "Has any one used the crank type awnings on their home?" I'm sure you'd get quite a bit of feed back. Good Luck!
At our last house, we installed solar screens on the windows. It helped with heat and UV damage. We also put in fairly fast-growing shade trees to help combat the sun. We used Cleveland Pears. They quickly grew very tall and with a large, shady canopy.
