For natural pest control, I plant basil, marigolds and parsley around the tomato plants.
Happy gardening! 🍅
Duck poo water is rhe best fertilizer you can ever have. Worm casings, horse manure in water works really well too. I have free horse manure in phx.
Put tomato cages on your tomato plants while they are small. Use the cages to support the weight of tomatoes as they grow. You can use old nylons or pipe cleaners to tie the plant to the cage. Don't use wire or string as both will cut thru the stalks. Tomatoes need a lot of water. I water mine for 15 or 20 minutes every morning. I water the soil and not the leafs. I have better results this way. I self pollinate my plants. Every couple days go out and gently jiggle each stalk. I read that unpollinated plants will yield 15% - 20% of the plant's capacity while pollinated plants will yield 90% - 95%. That's a huge difference! Good luck with your tomatoes.
I HAVE READ PUT BAMBOO STAKE BESIDE EACH PLANT TO TIE IT TO AS IT GROWS. BREAK OFF THE BOTTOM 2 OR 3 BRANCHES TO ENCOURAGE
GROWTH. ALSO PLANT DEEPER THAN WHEN SEEDLINGS PURCHASED OR GROWN AS ROOTS WILL FORM - MAYBE MOUND UP A INCH OR SO.
Thank you very much, I will try this
The more sunlight the better, at least 6 hours/day. Also, as Jim above says, plant deep and cut off a few branches at the base to encourage growth.
Keep them moist to prevent cracking as the tomatoes grow. Add some Epsom salts to the soil. You can place a cardboard milk carton around the plant to prevent cutworms from snipping off the plant at its base. Remove both ends of the carton and force one end into the soil. As they grow pinch out the suckers at the joint where the side stems come out of the main stem. Place tomato cages over the plants and reinforce with a long stick in the ground and tie it to the cage.
