I googled shade sails for privacy, diy. This could be a fun idea, with some help from the kids. You could adapt the size as you need, including overhead.
As your climate demands you could take them down for the winter.
They are not terribly expensive, and as they’re not permanent fencing wouldn’t require going through zoning permits, and you could adjust the height.
I have a VERY close neighbor. I wanted to create a "coffee corner" out my back door. So I am going to frame up some lattice to create a wall and a partial wall. On top, to make the shade, you can frame lattice also or make a pergola by using 1x6 treated lumber on a slant and connect it to your framed lattice. That's my idea I'm using.
I like the lattice because it's inexpensive and you could paint it or just seal it. I'm thinking on using the plastic lattice because of being maintenance free. Plus I'm debating on the 1x6's or using some old wooden extention ladders for the pergola.

How about lattice vinyl ? No painting, just hose it down with some dish washer detergent, no suds.
