i always tackle the kitchen first. it has the most "stuff" and takes the longest.
Hi Patricia the last time I moved I started with the closets and the areas of my house that were least used. I also took the opportunity then to get rid of a bunch of stuff too! From there I worked my way to the clothes and coat/shoes closets and packed up everything that was seasonal. From there I tackled my kitchen and packed up everything I knew I wouldn't be using. Getting your whole home down to only what you use on a daily basis will be a big relief and have you nearly 3/4s packed and ready to go!
Always heard that best boxes are ones from liquor store...be careful if you get any from grocery stores because you might move roaches into your new residence!
Are you moving yourself a short distance or miving a long way with a moving company? I packed all my kitchen things, first. I left clothes in the chests and just taped the shut. All hanging clothes, I just put in the car, leaving them on the hangers. I packed all my dodads together. Be sure to mark boxes, indicating the rooms, so you or movers will know which room to put them. If you have books, do not use big boxes or fill completely, because they get very heavy in a hurry. Be sure to put essentials, like toilet tissue, meds, toothbrush and paste, soap, towels and wash cloths, and a set of bed linens, in a bag together (coffee port and coffee, if you have to have coffee) and mark, so you will have those things handy, when you move, if you cannot unpack all boxes and you won't have to hunt for those things, when needed.
Stuff u know your not gunna use put in boxes n put in corner right away then I'd do the last 4 days all day long
N I'd start in bedrooms, then bathroom then basement n sheds n kitchen last
When we moved, we knew that most of the stuff would have not be used right away... I picked up 20+ of the clear sided clam shell plastic storage containers from a big box store.... they consistent size lets them stack really easily.. you can see the contents.. and they can be used for storage later. See if you can find ones with different colored tops... red tops... need now... black tops... can wait...etc.
We used office storage boxes to move books... smaller, lighter, stack nicely, easier to carry... no back injuries... fold to tuck away afterward...
Start packing with the stuff you will not need right away... separate out stuff that you WILL need immediately, coffee pot, silverware, skillet, dish towels, a few coffee cups... and pack a suitcase or box for each family member with enough clothes and toiletries to last a week.
I found that staging stuff in an empty room worked well both at the old house and the new one...
Clean out the old. Gather boxes from grocery stores, liquor stores. Pack the things you don't use every day first. Label everything.
As you clean, toss stuff you won't need any more. That way, when you get there, you won't have to do it. Label everything by room. Leave the kitchen and bath till last.
