What's the best way to move part of clematis plants to a new location? Dig up and separate roots?

If you can separate the roots then that is the time to do it. Keep the roots moist while you are digging the new holes. Water the plants in well and put some mulch around the base to help retain the moisture.

I would dig the roots and earth around the clematis and pot them for the move rather than separating the roots. Just moving them to a new location, may shock them. Disturbing the roots as little as possible would help their growth. Especially if you are moving them now in the early summer. Winter may be different.

Not sure when I will be doing this but I have clematis that sends out shoots from old growth and I have been told that I should cut them back to a few inches above ground level anyway. Thanks for the advice.
