Building a Custom Kitchen Island

I’m wanting to build a custom kitchen island, but I want it to be something that is solid and that will last for years. I also wanting it to be able to double as maybe a desk in future years if we decide to move. I also want the width greater than typical cabinets and I don’t want to just use standard bay of drawers as the base, I want it custom!

How would I build the base of the island if I want to leave a “cubby” in the center of the working side (not the side where people will be sitting)? I would just want sets of shelves or drawers on either side. Basically a cubby for a trash can and/or a cubby for a chair when used as a desk? Any information and tips would be greatly appreciated!!! I want this to be like a piece of furniture that my dad and I build together and that I can hold onto, so I want it to be solid!

  • When designing custom pieces, it is best to make yourself a "blueprint" of exactly what you desire. Then measure your space to make sure it will fit where you want with enough clearance on all sides. Then carefully come up with the dimensions for the piece. If you need help, enlist the assistance of a local cabinet maker that can advise exactly how to make your cuts and assemble. They can also suggest the best wood options too.

Houzz and pinterest will be the sites to start with to choose a design. Many options for height of your desk space and organizing solutions to be customized within. After you have your design and create a materials list based on dimensions. If you need build assistance youtube has instructional videos Or try finewoodworking for techniques. Hope this helps

I am a retired cabinet maker, and I draw all my own plans. Plans can be very tricky to draw properly. What I would suggest is to buy plans online. If they are not exactly what you want you can modify them. At least you’ have a base to start from. Plans are readily available online and they are inexpensive. Two sources you can try that immediately come to mind are Rockler and Woodcraft.

You may want to consider using kitchen cabinets as the island in a contrasting color to the present kitchen. Two 36" cabinets joined by the top of your choice. This would be stable as well as easy to move in the future when you can remove the top and take the two cabinets away.

One cabinet could be drawers the other could be doors for larger items. I like all drawers myself.

    Just a thought.
