Every year in the same spot we get tons of flies . .... I have never been able to kill a fly no matter how hard I tried - they are usually just too quick. .... We have the same problem. every year they appear underthe covered patio and just swarm.

I have always used a hanging brown paper bag. You can poof it up with something inside, tie a string around the top, and hang it in a doorway, or around the patio ceiling (you may need more than one if the area is open). To a fly(s) this looks like a hornet's nest and they stay away.
Peppermint - Take a spray bottle and add 2 teaspoons of peppermint extract and fill rest with water and spray. I also use little sponges to wipe tables and chairs. Smells great and flies hate it. Works every summer for us
The bag works.
My grandmother hung several clear zip-lock plastic bags half full of water and flies stayed away. Something about the movement of the water keeps them away.
