depends on what damage there is - you can get refinishing kits that are easy to use if you have a little knowledge and READ ALL THE INSTRUCTIONS! ha-speaking from experience
Check into the costs of each. Ie price the job, rembering to include price of removal, plumbing issues, delivery fees, and products required for installation. talk to a tub refinishing shop, check out thier work, will they give you a warranty? For how long? Occasionaly city state codes come into play. I remodeled a kitchen and a bath, both jobs required a rewire of the electric service to bring it up to today’s standards.
A good refinishing company will do a lasting job. However weigh the costs against getting a new tub.
Buy new, unless you have an antique piece you want to preserve and then there is only one place in the country that can really recast old tubs, and it is more expensive than buying new. All the other "refinishing" things out there don't hold up over time.
Have had a bathtub refinished professionally and anything that fell into the tub took a piece out of the paint. Hated it.
Would have a new tub installed or another one piece tub and surround installed over the old tub. Forget what they are called, but a friend had it done and it has served her well.
