My gosh Terri what a beautiful home!! Stone pavers come to mind to create a little path and then patio.
oh, yes what a charming and beautiful space. I would also use bricks and or pavers, maybe plant a climbing vine on the bldg to the right. Most important though is the use you want to make of this space? I would think you do not want to obscure the window. Do you want to sit with a friend for refreshments, read there, just keep to be visually appealing? What? How you intend to use it would help determine suggestions.
Use stone or slate pieces to make a narrow path and pad for a bench. Use a professional grade landscape fabric under the path to prevent the ivy from coming thru. Once you get your path and bench in, add pops of colorful flowers in a large pot or two to add some vertical interest. Maybe consider hanging a piece of metal sculpture on the brick was opposite the bench. They make brick clips to hang things on brick without drilling holes. Use neutral colors for furniture so your eye takes in the whole courtyard, not just the furniture.
i think slate would be perfect.
O.K. so you need at least one comfortable chair and two with maybe a bistro table. Looks like an enchanting spot for both those activities.

kill the grass first, then remove it and use paving stones to make a patio, or us bricks and sand between th bricks. Lay down landscape padding first to eliminate weeds
