I have tried using weed fabric with mulch over it and every year I need to redo it. I'm getting older and its costing me money to do this every year. If you have any ideas, I would sure appreciate it. Thank you

We use this product called Preen. This definitely helps with weeds. We got ours at Lowes. I’m sure you could purchase it online as well. I hope this will help for you.

I use something called Preen which prevents weeds from sprouting. It comes in granule form and you spread it over any area that you want to keep weeds from growing. You would need to repeat it every 3 months. It keeps the weeds out but does not hurt plants.

Do you put the fabric down every year?

Once you put the fabric down add Preen ( a seed germination inhibitor ) add mulch and then add more Preen. This will keep weed seeds from germinating. Even when you add mulch and fabric you can still get weeds growing. Weed seeds are always being spread and blown around. One more thing I do is put a weed killer solution in a kitchen spray bottle. I walk around my gardens a couple times a week and spray any little sprout that is starting. It also give me an opportunity to enjoy the beauty of my garden as I look out for those pesky weeds...

Hello! Although there is no sure-fire way to prevent weeds from rearing their ugly heads, you can keep them at bay. Prior to planting your flowers, till the soil so that the ground is not compacted. Weed deterrant fabric is not the only option — plastic and newspaper work well, too. Or you can hoe once a week or have a neighb kid do it fir a few bucks a week. Be sure your beds have borders to discourage encroaching weeds. Continue to apply mulch; however, since it is an expense to you, put half as much. Good luck!
