How much you go with a handyman, depends on the going rate in your area. Check out Angie's list. Take a couple of good clear color pictures of the wiring that connects your ceiling fan to make sure you get the right one, a sales associate in that department should be able to help you get what you need at a local home improvement store. They should be able to tell you what to connect to what and the pictures will help you get things connected right if you do it yourself. You will probably need a second person to help you, it really is easier. You most likely know someone that can help you that has done it before. It isn't much different than changing out a light fixture, just more cumbersome. Make sure that no electricity is flowing to the wiring when you disconnect the old and connect the new.
Cut the power to it, remove the screws holding it up, TAKE a PICTURE of the wiring configuration (IN COLOR) then remove and replace with new one wiring exactly the same as the picture
HomeAdvisor.com or Angieslist.com can give you a list of reference checked and verified Handymen (or women)... and if you get a new ceiling fan... consider getting one that has a "remote" we put ours on the wall like a light switch..... Also.... most large home improvement stores like Home Depot and Lowe's .. offer installation services... usually at a minimal cost... depending on the item .
Thanks.
Youtube has tutorial. My husband is an electrician and he taught me how to do it. Not too hard.
