There are large piece vinyl tiles, like 24" with wood grain and also sheet vinyl with woodgrain that give the look without the cost and upkeep of wood. I love being able to quickly dry mop/swiffer my continuous surface vinyl floor! It's great in the kitchen since a spill here or there is no big deal!

I saw where a person used plywood that had a nice wood on one side. The store , Lowe's or Home Depot, but it into 5" side pieces for them . They then only had to cut into lengths they wanted. Then the wood pieces were glued or nailed into place, hand sanded, cleaned, stained, and then covered with polyurethane with several coats.

Regarding Carol's comment to tile instead of laying down wooden flooring, the cost of tile flooring can also be high. The cost of a tiling job includes not only the individual tiles, but also the cost of specific tools and materials needed for preparing the subfloor, gluing, grouting, and sealing.
