We did something similar in front of our house. Put pavers down with about 6 inches of gravel in between pavers. Our course we picked roll of weed barrier and put that down on ground that had been packed and leveled. Entire project cost less then $300. This link should give you an idea:

Cyndar blocks work great for patios put sand first level it then lay blocks next to each other 2 at a time then 2 the other way and keep going depending how big you want it
make sure you really pack down the sand and or pea gravel whatever you use, so you have a good firm base.
You will need to rake and roll the area flat before you start.
