How to make a long narrow covered BBQ area look bigger

We have a "U" shaped home with a swimming pool in the middle of the "U". The walls of the home are all glass looking out onto the Pool. The pergola area feels narrow due to the pool fence. The longer part of the home opens into the kitchen dining lounge area.

If the pool fence is absolutely necessary, the only way to make a space feel bigger is with light colors and mirrors. If the pool fence is not absolutely necessary, perhaps you could install a pool cover instead. I have seen ads for pool covers that people can walk on. Best of luck to you.

Thanks for your reply. The pool fence has to stay as it is a legal requirement here in Australia. I will think about the lighter colours though and mirrors. Good idea. Thank you.

Do you have electrical outlets outside under the pergola area? If so, consider adding LED mini lights. As they require very little energy to operate, they could be left on even during the daytime or times when it is not full sunshine. (Do you get any of those days where you are in Australia? ) This would more dimension in the shadowy spaces and in doing so, visually widen the area under cover.

Thank you, love this idea. Yes, we do get a heap of sunny days in Queensland, Australia. Ha ha

You're welcome. Well, I guess you may not need more light during the daytime then, but the lights will make the pergola area feel wider and less closed-in after dark. Enjoy!
