I would either go with a grey that compliments the backsplash (grey would look nice up against the blue walls) or a shade of white.
I think staining them a slightly darker shade would look better than painted cabinets. And staining is easier.
I agree with Dee; you can use a polyurethane/stain product so all you need do is make sure the cabinets are grease free and wipe down with tack cloth to remove any lint, etc. and this would complement beautifully what you've done so far (nice job by the way). Also if there aren't any under-cabinet lights, do add those. You will be so glad you did.
