If it's old linoleum, it probably has asbestos in it. You can take a sample to your county extension office and they can test it. If it does have asbestos, you have to have a professional remove it or you can just lay new underlayment over the top of it. I just went through this. I knew I had hardwood floors underneath, but the linoleum backing stayed on the floor (that's where the asbestos is.) I said goodbye to the hardwood floors and installed new underlayment. I'm getting ready to try a technique I actually saw on here with brown paper, stain, and polyurethane.
If it is glued down (and most is) use a scraper. This is a long and hard job.
