Keep the plumbing in place, don’t try to move the sewer pipes. Or water pipes. Same with electricle wires. Up date the fixtures, new sink, commode, shower or tub. Paint.

Set a budget you can live with. The most expensive part of a remodel is moving plumbing and electrical, so first decide if you can live with the layout. Then decide what you can live with (like the vanity, countertop, fixtures) and what has to go. Can you fix with paint and new accessories, or is it a gut job. Paint and new hardware, lighting. towels and rugs can totally change the look and save you a lot of time and money. And doing most of the work yourself. Good luck.

I guess any bathroom (or other room) remodel can be done on a budget. It is all subjective. . .what is a budget to a rich person would not be a budget to me. So I would think, new toilet seat, not new toilet. We have only one real bathroom and have painted and papered it over the years, replaced a shower stall (but it still is plastic) replaced the press on tiles, and my husband built two small cabinets on wheels with ceramic tops which serve as a "vanity" I value creativity over budget so what I admire is that, not necessarily expensive fixtures.

Keep the original footprint and reuse as many fixtures as possible. Shop creatively (sales, craigslist, scratch and dent departments, Restore) for items that must be replaced. Use mosaic tiles as accents rather than covering large areas with them.
