Best substrate for brick path?

I am planning a garden revamp and want to install a path made from reclaimed bricks. I think I need to use a substrate base underneath the bricks but I'm not sure what is the best material to use. Also do I need to concrete the bricks in or can they be layed without it … and should I make a small concrete border to hold the bricks in place? Thank you

Good Morning Sandra HIll, No the bricks do not need concrete, and a border would only make your pathway look finished and reinforce the lay of the path, so I definitely would do that. A thick pad of gravel and sand. I used (on a stone path) polymerized sand as grout... it holds the stones and stays in place. Also inhibits weeds.
I've done this and once you get through the preparation and have the sand all leveled off the gratification comes quickly. Best of luck. --Ken
