How do I get my pack rat husband to let go of his stuff?

I like things orderly and uncluttered, but my pack rat husband won't let go of anything. He thinks he may use it some day. ( but he never does). And I can't seem to make him understand that.

Hi, Nancy. If he doesn't keep track of it all, try getting rid of just a few little things at a time. If he hasn't used it in a year or two, start with the things he may have forgotten about. Do this gradually and when he won't notice. Sooner or later you will get rid of some of the junk he won't let go of. He may not even notice.

eMy hubby wouldn't get rid of his 15 year old junk either. Until he saw a room that I went thru and cleaned out. He saw how organized it was and nice to know where something was located and that it was in working condition. He agreed to clean out one closet in his man cave. He was so impressed with how good it looked and the amount of trash he got rid of that he ended up going thru two rooms. Took a lot of stuff to the Salvation Army and to the dump and recycled some too. But it looks SO much better. We ended up painting and using his guitars (hung on the walls). He is proud now to have friends over.

  • They have to want to let go. Have you ever watched an episode or two of Hoarders? If you think there is a psychological reason for keeping things, try and get help. I grew up with war children (my mom lived in Austria during WWII), and I grew up where you fixed things, not toss like we today. It is one thing to toss something in a closet, drawer or garage for future use, it is another to never let go. I can't live in messy chaos, everything must have a home and be neat, tidy and orderly. I have a girlfriend that is a Class A slob where nothing is ever put away . . . Try getting rid of items or at least organize them to some semblance of order and organization.

Hi Nancy, The best way to make tiny changes in his chaos is thru his stomach. Promise him a favorite meal, or a favorite recipe, etc. if he will go thru a box or two. Sort of a reward method. Give him a small reward for going thru a small amount of his "stuff". Little by little may be the route to take. Wishing you both all the best.

try helping him organize his treasures, and he will discard in the process!! Slowly but surely, he will collect less, when he sees that he already has much of what he continues to collect😊
