My neighbor laid pressure treated 4x4's roughly 3 feet apart on the ground & made a walkway by screwing 1x4's to make what looks like a pier over water. He stained the 1x4's before attaching, turned out nice.
The first thing you have to do is remove these tree roots. And you can't be sure they won't ruin what you put down!
Go or call your local tree nursery. Most often removing those roots can be removed, depending on the tree. Good luck!
Cut the roots out. They are encroaching on your property. Mention it to your neighbor. Anything you put down the roots will just destroy. Two neighbors across from me had a tree bordering both properties. Owner of the tree did not want to cut it down. Cost too much. Other neighbor cut the roots and dug a trench on his property. Once a week he poured rock salt into the trench wet it down to kill/prevent roots from growing onto his property. Eventually this killed the tree and the tree owner had no choice but to cut it down. You can legally trim, cut, remove anything that is going onto your property.
