Soak it in milk. Then wash on hot water. The enzymes of the milk will remove the remainder of the blood in the garment.
Try rinsing with vinegar. We don't want to know how you got the blood in your gown, but I just had a flashback to the climax of the movie "Carrie".
I use 1/2c 20 Mule Team Laundry Borax in the wash, and 1/2c of white vinegar in the rinse.
Dove white bar soap usually works well soap up good and wash
