Wrap the base in rope, seal the wood add a top round of coarse. Smaller spools can be topped with round pillows and used as a stool.
A few years back I was given one and I made this chair which became a garden feature chair. The lady I sold it to added plants to the seat which flowed over the edges. It looked awesome.

Oh how I wish I could get my hands on some of these in a couple of sizes. I have had this idea to make a kids table and chairs out of these spools. I would paint the top with chalkboard paint and use bright colors for the rest
If these are large spools that wire has been wrapped around there are many options. You can paint them and use as outside tables with chairs to sit in your yard, one or two of them .Secondly, you could plant them as stands to put your plants potted in on top to give different dimensions to your yard.Dig a hole large enough to bury the bottom part in the ground or plant them in your garden and cover the bottom with enough soil, deep enough to keep them from falling over. You can paint these bright colours or a neutral colour. If you have children and can capable of some hard work you could build a play area for your children.in bright colours children enjoy..You Can built a climbing house going up and down and areas to crawl around the circle part of the centre.
