Try..
The $ amount of what is 'affordable' varies according to individual. A 10 x 12 base is substantial. Any materials used to cover an area this size will have to sturdy, adequately constructed, and securely anchored.
The materials to build a proper patio cover that is stable, safe, and durable, will not be cheap.
A temporary more manageable solution might be to purchase a large cantilever umbrella.
Have you considered a pergola? I currently have a shed-type cover over my patio, and my insurance company is charging for this square footage also because it is attached to the house. It is ugly and in need of repairs, so I am thinking of tearing it down and replacing with a detatched pergola to provide some shade for my patio and patio doors. In two years I have never sat on my patio while it is raining, so I really don’t need a full roof.
Hi Gretchen - Not sure exactly what you are looking for, but this is what we did to our space. May give you some ideas. Good luck! Hugs, Holly

This is not expensive and requires no digging :) just make sure if you go with something like this you purchase at least 1 set of the weights so it doesn't blow over. You can also get netting that goes over the top so it becomes a screened in area,

Good luck with your project!
If you only wanted to cover a portion of the space you may be able to hire someone. We bought a grapevine, very inexpensive and look at it now. This is not rain proof, but sun shade. However it has this structure underneath.
I like the look of sun shade sails. People have nade the out of drop cloths, canvas, polyester fabric. Even dyed the fabric.

Are you looking for shade only... or to keep off rain?
Canvas material sewn to the right size, spray with waterproofer, sew in loop tabs every foot or so, use PVC pipe to hold to up, cheap simple and will do the job
